Every class has different learners: different levels, different languages, different needs. One lesson plan rarely works for everyone. Universal Design for Learning, or UDL, is a way to plan and deliver lessons that work for more people from the start, instead of fixing problems later, one learner at a time.
In this course, you will learn UDL's three main ideas: giving learners different ways to stay motivated, different ways to take in information, and different ways to show what they have learned. We will look at these ideas through authentic examples of good practice.
Most of the course is very practical, offering hands-on strategies and activities. Bring one lesson or resource that you already use. You will redesign it together with other teachers, test it, and take home a version that removes a specific barrier for your own learners.
• Day 1: The three UDL ideas, and where normal lesson planning creates barriers for adult learners
• Day 2: Redesigning your own materials for more ways to engage with and understand the content
• Day 3: Giving learners more ways to show what they know; keeping your own workload realistic
