Social and Emotional Learning in Adult Education: Building Safe, Inclusive and Resilient Learning Environments

Many adult learners carry stress, tough experiences, or family responsibilities into the classroom, no matter what subject they come to study. This course looks at the emotional side of teaching adults: how to create a space where people feel safe enough to speak, try new things, and keep going when something is hard.
Over three days, you will learn a simple framework for building trust and safety in the classroom: safety, trust, choice, working together, support from other learners, and respect for different cultures. You will practice using it in real teaching situations through discussion and group work with other participants.
We will also talk about a growing idea: that these skills help adults find and keep a job, not just learn better in class. You will leave with clear ideas for making a plan you can use in your very first class back home.
    • Day 1: The basics of social and emotional learning; a simple framework for building safety and 
       trust
    • Day 2: Noticing stress and disengagement; building trust in a group; using conflict as a learning
    moment
    • Day 3: Social and emotional skills as a step toward employment; making your own plan

  • Participants will 
    • understand simple, practical steps for building trust and safety in an adult classroom.
    • notice signs of stress or difficulty in adult learners and respond with confidence.
    • have a handful of practical ideas and activities for promoting social-emotional learning in the classroom.
    • leave with a clear, personal plan for making their own teaching safer and more supportive.  

As a participant:

  • can you express yourself in English;
  • are you a team player;
  • you have a didactic, creative and innovative mind;
  • are you prepared to be inspired with an open mind and to inspire others to pass on what you have learned;
  • are you prepared to transfer the international knowledge you have learned to other contexts;
  • you are prepared to translate what you have learned into effective change in your own classroom practice and to share this within your department and beyond;
  • are you willing to commit to the Erasmus day in which you want to share what you have learned with colleagues from other participating school institutions;
  • are you willing to commit to the Erasmus podcast of Catholic Education Flanders to share what you have learned with the listeners of the podcast.
