Whether the consequences of the euro crisis, Brexit or the challenges posed by migration and the Russia-Ukraine war: "Europe" is more present than ever. At the same time, many citizens are not aware of the achievements they owe to the EU. Younger people in particular are not familiar with the situation before the EU, but they will be particularly affected by current European policy decisions. Thus, especially they should be introduced to the importance of the topic "Europe" in all its manifold aspects.
But how can we introduce young people to knowledge and experience of Europe in the school environment and give them the skills they need to be responsible European citizens? How are pupils of all ages and school types prepared for a trusting coexistence with our European neighbours, how is their interest awakened, and what is more: How are the so important affective learning objectives achieved? How can we teach this important topic outside of the traditional social science subjects and take up the topic in the upper grades and thus also reach younger pupils? The Certificate Course in European Competence provides answers and aims to support committed teachers of all subject areas and school types in this way to bring Europe into their schools.
