Broad student guidance for students in second chance education

This job shadowing focuses on broad student guidance in second chance education and on the ways in which adult education centres support learners with diverse educational and personal needs. Participants will visit different campuses of a VUC. The centre has several locations, including a large campus and smaller campuses. Working across these different sites will make it possible to examine how guidance and learner support are organised in urban, regional and partly online learning environments.
The programme will combine classroom observations with conversations involving teachers, student counsellors, managers and other staff members involved in learner support. Participants will explore how the host organisation creates an accessible and supportive learning environment for adults returning to education, including learners who previously experienced difficulties in compulsory or secondary education.
Particular attention will be given to the approach to dyslexia. Adult learners can be screened when dyslexia is suspected and can receive additional, specialised support alongside their regular programme. Participants will examine how this support is organised, how specialists and teachers collaborate, and how learners are helped to develop strategies for studying and participating in education.
The job shadowing will also include observations of online and individually paced learning. Participants will explore how teachers support learners who work at different levels or speeds, including learners who participate from more remote areas. The final part of the mobility will focus on reflection and on identifying practices that may be transferable to learner guidance and second chance education within the participating CVOs.
